“Letters to the Future, emotional geographies of a city” is an art installation that reflects on:

What might Stuttgart look like in the future?

How do we imagine it, perhaps in 80 years?

What would this city look like, its atmosphere, its spirit?

What is missing in Stuttgart today?

What would we like to preserve, restore, or forget?

 

Given the large proportion of the population with immigrant backgrounds, we sought out voices for our project from people who have experienced migration themselves —regardless of their origin, generation, gender or profession.

 

Who are we, the people who call this place home today? How will this place grow in our imagination, far into the future? How will this place continue to live on when we fill it with our stories?

The project focused on writing letters to the future of Stuttgart. The letters exhibited at Mailänder Platz in Stuttgart's Europaviertel district are intended as a collective invitation: a walk through the emotional geography of our city.

We want to claim the right to think about the place we decide to inhabit: an open, multicultural and diverse city where the spaces reflect the social and emotional fabric of its inhabitants. We imagine these possible visions of the future and explore how the urban and social environment could be transformed into a place where the mix of cultures, countries of origin and personal experiences is an essential part of the identity of that place.

The final installation is not a permanent work, but a temporary physical element that is activated with a performative gesture on the day of the first presentation and remains there for a certain period of time.
