the beauty of the animals still floating around, like a gallery of life

I want to be a female animal.

This exhibition is conceived as a new side and format of an investigation about women bodies and ideas of feminity, stereotypes and consume.

It is focused on a very powerful and eloquent mark: the murder, the death of the COW, in the slaughterhouse that is later cleaned up with products and all the chemistry that erases the trace.

 

I talk here about the life and death of the cow, as a fact that speaks to our vulnerability and violence.

 

The project builds a universe of installations made out of images, texts and objects, the result of an investigation into the different forms of violence   regarding the female body, the female flesh.

I talk about our forms of colonialism of desire, through a poetic and political parallel. In the end, this investigation is putting together two kind of flesh, strength and fragility (the human and the animal ones). Cow meat- woman meat. 

 

For some time I have also been studying stories of women who have traces of social violence on their bodies (not necessarily from a physical confrontation). The goal: to think what kind of narrative they can tell, and how they (oppressed, marginalised, discarded) might be more visible and empowered.

With this exhibition made of 5 installations of objects and photography I explore a kind of vindication of the power of the female body. How do we build a biography from the history of our bodies? How do we talk about our bodies from the body of a cow? 

How much does the body speak of our fictions and fears (what is hidden and what we are ashamed of)? And what about the Slaughterhouse? What is a slaughterhouse for us today?

 

A very relevant element is having this former slaughterhouse as a gallery, today a museum and art center. And in it, this specific hall, that was the place for killing pigs and young cows. The space (and its history) speaks for itself.

It still holds old machinery, tables, metallic bath tubes and hooks All of this spreads a memory of industrialised violence, models of consumption and hidden fragility.

 

Installations:

1. Before you must look at me (video on tv screen).

2. The Hunger History (book "History of a Roman Slaughterhouse"- 46 printed photographies on two wooden cutting tables). 

3. Green garden and fabric hologram (4 kg of fresh lettuce- white wedding dress on 1 wooden cutting table). 

4. Talking heads (testimonies) (7 hanging paper sheets -type letter- and 7 iron hooks). Women testimonials.

 

5. Elfriede and the cow arriving (black ink on white canvas- 120 cm x 52 cm).
